Georgia Football: Nick Chubb named No. 5 running back in the NFL

247 Sports has named Nick Chubb the No. 5 running back heading into the 2021 NFL season.

Georgia football is known for putting big-time running backs into the NFL. Runners such as Herschel Walker, Rodney Hampton, Garrison Hearst, Terrell Davis, Robert Edwards, Musa Smith, Todd Gurley, Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, and D’Andre Swift. When it comes to NFL success, Chubb may be the best one on the list, and 247 Sports has chosen to acknowledge that by naming him their number five running back heading into the 2021 NFL season.

Chubb missed four games last season with an MCL sprain and ended the year seventh in the league with 1067 yards. He also had 12 touchdowns which were fourth in the league. Chubb’s 5.6 yards per carry were second-best among running backs, coming up just 0.4 yards short of rookie JK Dobbins. The fact that Chubb was able to miss four games, come in the top ten in total rushing yards, and top five in rushing touchdowns speaks to his amazing talents.

Now let’s look at the running backs that 247 Sports put over Chubb. Those running backs would be Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffreyAlvin Kamara, and Dalvin Cook. That’s a nice list of running backs to be in the company of, some of the best in the NFL, no doubt. However, are they all actually better and more productive than Chubb has been during his first three seasons? Let’s take a look.

Totals

RBTouchTotal YardsTotal TDYards/Touch
Nick Chubb7524134305.5
Derrick Henry9485045475.3
Christian McCaffrey8054731385.9
Alvin Kamara7974610455.8
Dalvin Cook8324492345.4

As you can see in the table, all four of the other running backs have touched the ball more than Chubb over his three years in the league. This explains why his total yards and total touchdowns are last in this group. However, his yards per touch coming in third shows that he is the third most efficient running back in this group. The only two that are better all-around backs than Chubb are McCaffrey and Kamara.

Even if you believe that Chubb is the fifth-best running back in the league, that is one heck of an accomplishment after just three seasons in the league. Georgia football has done it again. They have put another dynamic runner into the NFL, and he has proven to be one of the best. This is why Georgia is known as Running Back University. With running backs like Kendall Milton, Zamir White, James Cook, and Kenny McIntosh waiting their turn to get into the NFL, that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
