Georgia football has had some great defenses under Kirby Smart, but this unit could be his best.
Kirby Smart has been the head coach of Georgia football since 2016. However, he spent nine years of his coaching career as a Defensive Coordinator before that. Before Smart ever became a coach of any kind he was a safety at Georgia. So to say that Smart knows defense would be an understatement. When it comes to creating elite defensive schemes Smart just may be the best.
As with any scheme, Smart starts by building his defenses at the line of scrimmage. When you have guys like Devonte Wyatt, Jordan Davis, and Travon Walker lining up for you at the line of scrimmage it makes the rest of the defense’s job that much easier. Of course, these guys do a lot more than take on blocks and allow the linebackers to roam free. Through the first two games, Georgia’s defensive linemen have 6.5 tackles for loss including four sacks.
